The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has received studies from several States and organizations regarding the potential interference to radio altimeters. These studies generally conclude that several makes and models of radio altimeters will not operate as intended if new cellular broadband technologies (that is, fifth generation cellular network technology (5G)) are deployed at high powers in frequency bands close to the radio altimeter’s frequencies of operation. Several States have already implemented temporary technical, regulatory and operational mitigations on new 5G systems to protect radio altimeters while the aviation industry is working on long-term solutions to redesign and retrofit altimeters to improve compatibility between cellular broadband technologies (such as 5G) and aviation systems
